Enhancements to Serenity Ridge

Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of Maryland lies Serenity Ridge, an exceptional sanctuary that stands as the only 100% natural burial cemetery in our beautiful state. With this distinction comes a profound responsibility—to remain current and up to date on national standards and to enlighten the community about the many benefits that natural burial bestows upon both families and the environment alike. In an era where many options exist for handling the physical remains of cherished loved ones, we firmly advocate for natural burial as the pinnacle choice for families.

At the heart of our philosophy lies a return to the timeless traditions of humanity’s burial practices. While the funeral industry in the United States underwent transformations around the time of the Civil War, Serenity Ridge harkens back to simpler times—a return to basic burial rites, enhanced familial involvement, all within the embrace of a flourishing nature preserve. Here, families find solace in revisiting their loved ones amidst a backdrop of natural serenity, fostering moments of quiet contemplation and reverence.

Serenity Ridge is committed to minimizing our ecological footprint by collaborating closely with local organizations dedicated to environmental restoration. Through these partnerships, we actively contribute to the rejuvenation of our nature preserve. Our ongoing efforts are bolstered by a network of esteemed non-profit organizations, each united in their mission to safeguard the sanctity of our natural surroundings.

Together, we cultivate a haven where the legacy of loved ones lives on in harmony with the rhythms of nature—a testament to our unwavering dedication to sustainability, familial connection, and the enduring beauty of the earth.

Today, we share with you some of the improvements we’ve made to our beautiful property:

In 2023, we made significant strides in enhancing our property’s infrastructure and environmental sustainability efforts:

  • Streamlining vehicle movement and parking infrastructure to facilitate smoother navigation on the premises.
  • Collaborating with the Patapsco Heritage Greenway to eradicate invasive plant species, ensuring the preservation of the natural ecosystem.
  • Revamping the property’s entrance with clear signage while concurrently eliminating invasive flora, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and environmental integrity.
  • Teaming up with the Patapsco Heritage Greenway (PHG) and the Greater Baltimore Wilderness Coalition (GBWC) to initiate a tree-planting initiative, resulting in the cultivation of over 200 trees to promote reforestation in designated areas.
  • Planting an additional 30 robust trees along the roadway, marking the initial steps in delineating the property boundaries while contributing to the overall greenery.
  • Pioneering the establishment of a vibrant wildflower garden, enriching the landscape with biodiversity and natural beauty.

  • We’ve set up an Apiary, buzzing with life with 2 active bee hives. Excitingly, we’re planning to expand with 2 more hives soon.
  • Our partnership with PHG continues to flourish as we work diligently to eradicate invasive species from our surroundings.
  • Recently, I had the pleasure of walking the trails with Councilman Julian Jones, Bob Smith from Baltimore County Rec and Parks, and Ashley Traut from the GBWC. Together, we’re crafting clear signage that will delineate the 3-mile trails on Serenity Ridge property and the donated green space in Baltimore County. Anticipate these signs on the landscape by early summer.
  • Currently, we’re collaborating with an architect to design a versatile building that will double as a community meeting center and the offices for Serenity Ridge. Pending permits, we aim to commence construction in the fall, with completion slated for Spring 2025.
  • Exciting plans are in the works for our tree farm! In June, we’ll be tagging 70-80 majestic trees, primed for planting in the fall. This initiative aims to further enrich our nature preserve and arboretum.
  • To bolster our apiary and add a touch of vibrancy, we’re cultivating a flower garden featuring species that repel deer but attract bees. Additionally, we’ll have a selection of homegrown flowers for various occasions, including funeral services and moments of remembrance
  • Our commitment to enhancing the landscape doesn’t stop there. Expect to see more wildflower seeds scattered throughout the fields, painting the seasons with bursts of color from spring to fall. Lastly, we’re enhancing the serenity of our space with the addition of benches, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and connect with nature’s tranquility.
